⚡ Megawatt charging: a first on the A2 in Germany

The first MCS (Megawatt Charging System) infrastructure for electric trucks is now being deployed along the A2 motorway, a strategic corridor linking Berlin to the Ruhr region.

The first public megawatt charging point for battery-electric heavy-duty trucks has officially been commissioned at the Lipperland Süd service area. The inauguration, held last September, brought together representatives from politics, industry, research, and the media. The highlight of the event was a live demonstration of MCS charging under real operating conditions, carried out by a MAN Truck & Bus MAN eTGX.

This commissioning marks a key milestone in the HoLa – High Performance Charging for Long-Haul Transport project, supported by the German Federal Ministry of Transport and the European Union. The objective is clear: to test MCS technology in real-world operation and gradually deploy a continuous high-performance charging network along the A2, one of Germany’s main logistics corridors.

As part of this pilot project, MAN Truck & Bus has partnered with logistics companies Duvenbeck and Hillert. Since September 2025, each company has been operating a MAN eTGX electric truck on the HoLa route linking Berlin to the Ruhr region, demonstrating the feasibility of zero-emission long-distance transport.

Equipped with the megawatt charging system, the MAN eTGX showcases the full potential of MCS technology: drastically reduced charging times, fully compatible with the demanding operational requirements of long-haul road transport.

MAN Truck & Bus has confirmed that series production of MCS technology will begin in the second quarter of 2026 on the MAN eTGX and MAN eTGS models, paving the way for broader adoption of ultra-fast charging solutions for electric heavy-duty vehicles.

With this first operational MCS charging point, Germany positions itself as one of Europe’s pioneers in megawatt charging — a critical lever for accelerating the energy transition in road freight transport.
