Volvo Trucks Electric Range Named International Truck of the Year 2027

Volvo Trucks’ new electric range has been named International Truck of the Year 2027 by the 24 members of the jury. Comprising the FH, FM, FMX and FH Aero Electric families, this new generation impressed the jury with its combination of increased range, a wide range of applications, high energy efficiency and significant operational flexibility.

The trophy was presented to Volvo Trucks during the Night of the Stars gala evening, organised as part of IAA Transportation in Hanover, Germany.

With 86 points, Volvo Trucks came ahead of a particularly strong field made up of the new Ford Trucks F-Max, the IVECO S-eWay Aero Tractor, the MAN eTGM and the Mercedes-Benz eArocs 400.

In accordance with the regulations of the International Truck of the Year (IToY), the title is awarded each year to the vehicle marketed during the previous twelve months that has made the most significant contribution to road transport efficiency. The assessment covers various criteria, including technological innovation, comfort, safety, driving pleasure, energy efficiency, environmental performance and total cost of operation (TCO).

The 2027 result marks the fourth consecutive victory for a battery-electric truck in the International Truck of the Year competition. It highlights the rapid progress made in the field of heavy-duty transport with zero tailpipe emissions. Four of the five finalist vehicles in the 2027 edition were battery-electric, while the new Ford F-Max demonstrates that the development of conventional powertrains is continuing in parallel.

A major evolution of Volvo’s electric offering

Volvo’s new award-winning electric range represents a major evolution of the manufacturer’s battery-electric heavy-duty truck offering.

This renewed range covers a wide variety of transport applications, from regional operations and the construction sector to the most demanding long-distance missions. It also introduces new powertrain solutions, more configuration possibilities and significantly increased ranges.

The FH Aero Electric dedicated to long-distance transport claims a range of up to 700 km on a single charge, opening the way to a much wider range of uses in this type of transport.

At the same time, the new-generation FH, FM and FMX Electric models offer up to 470 km of range, providing a flexible platform suited to different types of transport and operating cycles.

During the assessment conducted by the jury, the members particularly highlighted the way Volvo has developed its electric offering beyond a single vehicle or a single application.

The combination of increased range, different cab and chassis configurations, as well as solutions specifically adapted to long-distance transport, regional transport, distribution and construction, demonstrates that battery-electric technology is gradually becoming a concrete alternative for a wide range of applications in heavy-duty transport.

Florian Engel, president of the International Truck of the Year jury, sums it up:

“With its new electric range, Volvo Trucks demonstrates how quickly battery-electric heavy-duty transport is evolving, moving from specific applications to a complete transport solution.”

A new step towards zero tailpipe emissions transport

This award also represents another important step for Volvo Trucks in its transition towards transport with zero tailpipe emissions.

The manufacturer had already made history in 2024, when the Volvo FH Electric became the first battery-electric truck to win the International Truck of the Year title.

Volvo is now back at the top of the podium with an electric range designed to cover an even wider spectrum of applications in heavy-duty transport.
