BYD prepares an electric 4×2 tractor unit: prototype spotted in the Netherlands

Sometimes, being in the right place at the right time is all it takes. That is exactly what happened to our Dutch colleague Arjan Velthoven, a member of the Truck of the Year jury.

The TTM.nl photographer recently had the opportunity to capture a still-camouflaged prototype at Bluekens EV.

And there is little doubt about it: this is indeed an electric BYD tractor unit in a 4×2 configuration. Rumours had already been circulating about a major BYD announcement at the upcoming IAA Transportation show, without any precise details emerging. This sighting now appears to lift part of the veil.

From the images, the vehicle is a standard-size 4×2 tractor unit. True to its strategy, BYD is expected to offer a fully electric model here. The camouflage still prevents a clear view of the cab lines, and technical specifications remain unknown at this stage.

However, according to sources close to the manufacturer, this future model could be offered with several battery capacities and support charging power of up to 1 MW. Another notable detail: the absence of traditional mirrors, replaced by a camera-based system.

For more information, we will likely have to wait for the IAA Transportation show, taking place in Hanover this coming September. There is no point heading to Bluekens EV in the meantime, however: the vehicle has already left the premises and is currently understood to be undergoing real-world testing within a customer fleet in Europe.
