Five trucks in the running for the Truck of the Year 2027 title

Five trucks have reached the final stage of the selection process for the Truck of the Year 2027 title. This selection reflects the acceleration of the transition towards electrification as well as the growing sophistication of vehicles designed for transport and distribution, as well as long-distance transport.

Five finalists, one title

The finalists for the Truck of the Year 2027 (IToY) are now known. The Iveco S-eWay Aero, the new Ford F-Max, the MAN eTGM, the Mercedes-Benz eArocs 400 and Volvo’s new electric range have made it through to the final.

Awarded each year by the International Truck of the Year jury, the title rewards the vehicle launched on the market during the previous twelve months that has made the most significant contribution to road transport efficiency. The assessment notably covers technological innovation, comfort, safety, driving experience, energy efficiency, environmental performance and total cost of ownership (TCO).

“This year’s finalists show just how much the concept of progress in road transport has broadened,” explains Florian Engel, Chairman of the International Truck of the Year jury. “We are not focusing on one particular technology, but on how effectively each vehicle meets the real needs of operators and drivers.”

New Ford F-Max

Ford Trucks returns to the IToY final with its new F-Max, an evolution of the model that won the title in 2019.

The latest model adopts an updated 510 hp Ecotorq powertrain, along with various developments concerning the cab, the driver environment, digital systems and solutions designed to improve efficiency.

Its nomination also confirms that the combustion engine remains fully present in the 2027 competition, at a time when the sector is currently experiencing extremely rapid changes in powertrains.

Iveco S-eWay Aero

The Iveco S-eWay Aero represents the latest development from the Italian manufacturer in the field of heavy-duty battery-electric transport.

The S-eWay programme combines LFP battery technology, an FPT Industrial eAxle and a cab developed around aerodynamic efficiency. The S-eWay platform notably targets longer-distance electric applications.

The jury will notably have to assess how electrification, aerodynamics, genuinely usable battery capacity and overall vehicle integration come together to form a truly operational heavy-duty transport solution.

MAN eTGM

The MAN eTGM brings battery-electric propulsion into the medium-tonnage distribution sector.

Its modular battery concept allows operators to choose between two, three or four packs, in order to adapt the balance between payload, range and cost to the needs of each application.

In its four-battery configuration, MAN announces a range of up to 480 km in rigid distribution use.

The flexibility offered to bodybuilders, as well as the possibility of installing a mechanical power take-off, also strengthens its potential for real-world applications.

Mercedes-Benz eArocs 400

The new Mercedes-Benz eArocs 400 brings battery-electric propulsion to demanding applications in the construction sector.

Available as a concrete mixer or tipper, it uses two lithium iron phosphate battery packs for an installed capacity of 414 kWh, allowing a range of up to 240 km.

With a continuous output of 380 kW, CCS charging capacity of up to 400 kW and an Arocs architecture designed for demanding work, it becomes another zero-tailpipe-emission finalist.

Volvo’s new electric range

Volvo reaches the final with a thoroughly revised heavy-duty electric range covering the FH, FM, FMX and FH Aero Electric.

This new generation introduces revised electric powertrains, more usage possibilities and increased ranges.

The FH Aero Electric Extended Range announces up to 700 km on a single charge, while the new generations of the FH, FM and FMX Electric Versatile can reach up to 470 km.

A particularly demanding final

For Florian Engel, this selection reflects both the rapid progress of electrification and the different approaches adopted by manufacturers to meet the challenge of energy efficiency.

“The strong presence of battery-electric trucks in this year’s final reflects the speed at which this technology is evolving,” he points out. “But these vehicles address very different applications and operating requirements. The jury’s task is to go beyond the announced figures and assess the effectiveness of each truck as a complete transport solution. Efficiency, safety, driver acceptance, environmental performance and operating costs must work together.”

Hanover will reveal the winner

The winner of the Truck of the Year 2027 will be announced at the IAA Transportation in Hanover, Germany, during the Night of the Stars gala evening on Monday, 14 September 2026.

“For manufacturers, the pace of development is extraordinary, but operators ultimately need trucks that work,” concludes Florian Engel. “The 2027 finalists show several different ways of meeting that challenge. Our task now is to determine which one will make the greatest overall contribution to road transport efficiency.”
