A first electric training truck to train the drivers of tomorrow

In Isques (Pas-de-Calais), the ECF Pro training center in Boulogne-sur-Mer has added a Mercedes-Benz eActros 600 to its fleet, becoming the first institution in France to offer heavy truck license training on a 100% electric vehicle.

This initiative comes in a context of transformation within the sector, marked by the gradual electrification of fleets. For training providers, the challenge is now to anticipate these changes by preparing future drivers for the specificities of new powertrains, particularly in terms of range, charging, and energy management.

The vehicle, specially adapted for training purposes, has been equipped with dedicated learning features, including dual controls with instructor-side pedals, a video capture system for the driving position, and a screen allowing the trainer to monitor the student’s actions in real time.

Beyond these adaptations, the Mercedes-Benz eActros 600 retains the characteristics of a long-haul transport truck, with a range of up to 500 kilometers without intermediate charging under standard operating conditions.

This project has benefited from the support of several partners, particularly for the financing of the vehicle and the installation of on-site charging infrastructure, highlighting the importance of a comprehensive approach to the sector’s energy transition.

Through this first initiative, the stakeholders involved aim to support the adaptation of skills to market developments and contribute to the growth of electromobility in road transport. Training is thus emerging as a key lever to support the sector’s transformation and prepare the next generation of drivers for the environmental and technological challenges ahead.
