MAN TGM: Five Euro NCAP Stars

Safety has become one of the main fields of innovation in road transport, and trucks dedicated to urban deliveries are at the center of the discussion.

On this subject, MAN has just scored an important point. The German manufacturer announces that its MAN TGM has obtained the maximum five-star rating in the latest Euro NCAP tests dedicated to heavy-duty vehicles. This distinction rewards the work carried out on the driving assistance systems and active safety features of this truck mainly intended for regional and urban distribution.

But that is not all. Alongside this maximum rating, the TGM has also received the CitySafe distinction, a label awarded to vehicles offering a particularly high level of safety in urban environments.

A double reward that confirms the growing importance of assistance technologies in drivers’ daily work.

As you have already seen in several of our TruckStop publications, for a few years now Euro NCAP has no longer been limited to passenger cars. The independent European organization now also evaluates heavy-duty vehicles according to increasingly strict criteria in order to encourage the continuous improvement of road safety.

The tests focus in particular on three major areas: safe driving, collision prevention, and post-crash safety. To obtain its five stars, the MAN TGM demonstrated particularly balanced performance across all of these categories.

Among the equipment highlighted by Euro NCAP are several driving assistance systems that have now become essential on modern vehicles. The MAN TGM is notably equipped with a driver monitoring system capable of detecting signs of fatigue or reduced attention. A technology that directly contributes to preventing accidents related to drowsiness or distraction.

The vehicle is also equipped with an advanced emergency braking system, a turning assistant, a lane change assist system, as well as lane keeping and intelligent speed management systems. Equipment that assists the driver on a daily basis while helping to reduce the risk of collisions.

Obtaining the CitySafe award is undoubtedly one of the most significant aspects of this distinction. This label rewards vehicles that are particularly well suited to urban traffic, where heavy trucks, cars, cyclists, pedestrians, and scooter users share the same space.

To earn this distinction, several criteria are examined: direct visibility quality, detection system performance, and the vehicle’s ability to prevent collisions with vulnerable road users. In other words, the situations that distribution drivers face every day.

For Dr. Frederik Zohm, Member of the Executive Board of MAN Truck & Bus responsible for Research and Development, this distinction confirms the manufacturer’s strategy.

“The five-star rating awarded by Euro NCAP confirms our ongoing commitment to a comprehensive approach to safety, from accident prevention to post-collision assistance. In distribution activities and urban environments, where drivers share limited space with many other road users, these technologies play a decisive role in reducing risks,” he explains.

Beyond commercial performance or fuel consumption, safety criteria are now taking an increasingly important place in the choice of an industrial vehicle. Manufacturers are investing heavily in driver assistance systems, not only to comply with new European regulations but also to improve drivers’ working conditions and reduce accident risks.

With this maximum five-star rating and its CitySafe distinction, the MAN TGM demonstrates that modern distribution trucks no longer simply transport goods. They are also becoming true safety partners on the road.

A strong signal sent to the entire sector at a time when road safety remains more than ever a priority for transport operators, local authorities, and manufacturers.
