John O’Leary Interview

Revealed: The Strategy Behind Daimler Truck’s Market Dominance
With several decades of leadership in the North American market, Daimler Truck North America (DTNA) has established itself as a major player in the heavy-duty transport industry. At the helm is John O’Leary, President and CEO, who has guided the company through transformation, innovation, and numerous challenges.
In this exclusive interview with Florian Engel, President of the International Truck of the Year (IToY) jury, O’Leary shares the keys to DTNA’s long-term success, the strengths of its dual-brand strategy (Freightliner and Western Star), and how he navigates the uncertain political and economic landscape of the United States with clarity, resilience, and ambition.
John, DTNA has been the market leader for years. Where does this success come from?
I think we’ve been fortunate to succeed across several segments in North America. Historically, we’ve been very strong in the long-haul market—full truckload, less-than-truckload, and so on. More recently, we’ve expanded into the vocational segment (specialized vehicles for construction, municipal services, etc.).
Today, Western Star is really gaining momentum. It used to be a niche brand, but it’s becoming a recognized player in the market.
You mentioned Freightliner and Western Star. How does this two-brand strategy work?
Freightliner is primarily known for long-haul and medium-duty applications, allowing us to cover a broad range of customer needs. In a good year, we sell around 200,000 vehicles across North America to many different types of customers.
Freightliner is the truck of the major fleets: Ryder, Penske, Schneider, XPO… they all operate predominantly Freightliners.
But to compete in the vocational segment, that wasn’t enough. Freightliner is too closely associated with highway transport. We needed a different identity. Western Star already had a strong image—well established in Canada, with a reputation for ruggedness. So we invested in making it what it is today: a strong emerging brand in the heavy vocational segment.
The current political environment is challenging. How do you deal with it?
You have to focus on what you can control. There are many things I’d like to influence… but I can’t. So we make the best possible decisions with the information we have and remain flexible.
As things change, we have to be able to pivot. You can’t close doors too early. As soon as there’s clarity—whether on emissions regulations or the economy—we move quickly and decisively.
The secret is to be prepared, to have already considered different scenarios. And above all, to execute flawlessly every single day on the things we can control. An efficient, profitable, and agile company can navigate a great deal of uncertainty. And I believe that’s exactly where we are today.
One final question: what do you expect over the next few years?
I believe that once the situation in the United States becomes clearer—both economically and from a regulatory standpoint—we’ll really be able to accelerate.
Right now, many players are waiting, and that’s frustrating. But once the direction is established—even if it isn’t 100% favorable to us—we’ll know how to move forward with confidence.
We have great products, a strong dealer network, and loyal customers. And in this B2B industry, trust is everything. That’s the foundation we’ll continue to build on, regardless of tariffs or emissions regulations.
👉 In short: keep executing, keep being the best. That’s our roadmap.
Thank you very much!
