Scania France is shaking up technician recruitment!

Faced with a persistent shortage of heavy-duty mechanics, Scania France is tackling the problem at its roots with an innovative approach

Gone is the obsession with qualifications, motivation and career changers are now front and centre.

The manufacturer is launching a tailored training programme aimed at candidates from other industries who share a passion for mechanics. A concrete response to a major sector challenge, marked by a lack of appeal in technical trades and a wave of retirements.

The first cohort got underway in early March at the Angers training centre, with 5 candidates already taken on with permanent contracts. Over 4 months (224 hours), they follow a work-study programme combining technical training with hands-on workshop experience.

On the curriculum: full maintenance and repair of the driveline, engine, gearboxes, braking systems… with a highly practical approach designed for rapid skills development.

Each learner is supported by a mentor at their branch, with one clear objective: to be fully operational by the end of the programme.

But beyond the technical side, it is a genuine philosophy that Scania is putting in place:

  • Betting on potential rather than CVs
  • Training to in-house methods and standards
  • Building long-term talent loyalty

The result: direct integration into the Scania network from summer 2026 onwards.

In a context of technological transformation, electrification, new energy sources, the role of technician is becoming increasingly strategic… and complex.

With this initiative, Scania is sending a strong signal: solving the skills shortage will also require openness and training.
