MAN back at the forefront with its new TGX 41.640

With the launch of the MAN TGX 41.640 8x4/4, capable of moving combinations weighing up to 250 tonnes, MAN Truck & Bus makes a strong return to the top tier of heavy transport.

An exceptional tractor unit designed to move the most impressive loads of modern industry: wind turbines, high-voltage transformers, or even submarines. With this model, MAN sends a clear message: the brand intends to reclaim its place in the premier league of heavy haulage.

At first glance, the TGX 41.640 immediately sets the tone. With its four axles and 640 horsepower, it is aimed directly at heavy haulage specialists.

This type of vehicle is designed to work with convoys that can include more than thirty axles, hydraulically steered to navigate roundabouts, intersections and industrial sites.

To control these massive combinations, the MAN features highly specialized equipment:

The result: a truck capable of precisely manoeuvring loads reaching several hundred tonnes.

At the heart of this giant is the MAN D3876 engine, a well-known inline six among power enthusiasts.

This engine produces 640 hp and 3,000 Nm of torque, available across a wide rev range — a crucial characteristic for heavy haulage, where convoys often move at very low speeds while carrying enormous loads.

The MAN TipMatic 12.30 OD gearbox incorporates a WSK torque converter, multiplying torque up to 1.59 times during starts. This makes it possible to launch convoys weighing hundreds of tonnes without stressing the drivetrain.

On the braking side, the Retarder 40 provides very high continuous braking power, essential for maintaining control on long downhill sections.

To meet the specific needs of heavy haulage, MAN developed a dedicated architecture known as the heavy-duty tower, located behind the cab.

The hydraulic system delivers up to 300 bar of pressure and can supply 20 or 40 litres of oil per minute to power the steering systems of modular trailers.

A dedicated heavy-transport cooling system is also integrated to keep engine temperatures stable during slow but extremely demanding manoeuvres.

The TGX 41.640 is fitted with coupling equipment designed for extreme missions.

At the front, the JOST JSK 38 C 3.5-inch fifth wheel is mounted on an 800 mm sliding plate, allowing precise load distribution adjustments.

For pushing or combined traction operations, the truck can be equipped with a multi-height front coupling.

At the rear, an optional ROCKINGER 56 EA coupling with automatic locking is available, making manoeuvres easier on difficult terrain.

Unlike some heavy-haul conversions carried out by specialized bodybuilders, this new MAN is a fully integrated factory solution.

The base chassis is produced at the Munich MAN plant before being sent to the Wittlich Truck Modification Center, where it receives all heavy-haul specific equipment.

This approach allows the manufacturer to deliver a fully integrated vehicle with the same warranty and service support as a standard production model.

The first 250-tonne MAN TGX has already been delivered to BFS, a German specialist in industrial vehicle rental.

Finished in dark blue livery, this tractor will be offered to transport companies needing very powerful equipment for occasional exceptional transport operations.

For BFS, it immediately becomes the flagship vehicle of its specialized rental fleet.

With this extraordinary TGX, MAN once again covers the entire road transport spectrum, from the MAN TGE at 3.5 tonnes to 250-tonne heavy haulage operations. For heavy transport specialists, the message is clear: MAN is seriously back in the heavy haulage game.
