BYD Goes on the Offensive in the European Electric Truck Market

After buses and cars, the Chinese giant is now targeting road transport

For a long time, BYD was associated in Europe with electric buses. More recently, the Chinese manufacturer established itself in the automotive market with a range of passenger vehicles that continues to gain ground, and the French figures are clear. Now, it is towards road transport that the group is turning its ambitions.

During the annual Handelsblatt Commercial Vehicles 2026 conference organized in Munich, BYD unveiled the main outlines of its European strategy for commercial vehicles. A strategy that goes far beyond the simple framework of the electric truck and could well reshuffle certain cards in the European market.

Because at BYD, the truck is only one part of the equation.

The market is ready for electric… but under certain conditions

For Barış Akyalçın, head of the eTruck Europe department at BYD Europe, the energy transition of road transport is now underway.

Urban areas, regional distribution activities, local authorities, ports and logistics platforms already constitute favorable grounds for electrification. Environmental regulations are being strengthened, low-emission zones are multiplying, and more and more companies are integrating decarbonization objectives into their strategy.

But between political ambitions and field realities, there is still significant work to be done. Transport operators want vehicles capable of working immediately, with controlled costs and simple operation. Above all, they are looking for profitable solutions.

Because the question is no longer whether the electric truck will arrive. The real question now is under what conditions it can be operated efficiently.

“We are a technology company”

One of the key messages delivered by BYD during this conference concerns its positioning. The Chinese manufacturer refuses to be considered a simple truck manufacturer. “BYD is not a traditional manufacturer. We are first and foremost a technology company,” explains Barış Akyalçın.

Unlike many players in the sector, BYD internally masters a large part of the essential technologies: batteries, electric motors, power electronics, software and semiconductors. This vertical integration allows the group to have greater control over costs, supply chains and technological development. An approach that today constitutes one of the manufacturer’s main strengths.

The battery at the heart of the strategy

At the center of the system is the famous Blade battery. Already widely used in BYD passenger cars, this technology is now being deployed on the brand’s buses and future trucks. According to the manufacturer, the battery must offer three essential qualities for heavy transport: safety, longevity and efficiency.

A major challenge at a time when customers are demanding vehicles capable of carrying out rapid charging cycles while maintaining their performance over time. For BYD, the battery quite simply remains the heart of the electric vehicle.

Already solid experience in professional transport

While BYD is still relatively discreet in the European truck market, the manufacturer already has significant experience in public transport. The group claims more than 7,000 electric buses in operation across Europe and the United Kingdom. Globally, more than 120,000 electric commercial vehicles are currently said to be in operation.

Building on this experience, BYD now intends to accelerate its development in several segments: light commercial vehicles, distribution trucks, municipal vehicles, port applications, airport platforms and closed industrial sites. The objective is clear: become a major player in electric professional transport.

The real challenge is called energy

But for BYD, the main obstacle to electrification is not necessarily found in the vehicle itself. The real issue today is energy. The manufacturer notably cites the example of the Netherlands, where certain regions are already experiencing electrical grid capacity difficulties.

For a transport operator, having several electric trucks implies significant needs in charging power, energy management and suitable infrastructure. Without available energy, the truck remains immobilized. And when charging times become incompatible with operational requirements, the entire organization of the company must be rethought.

Selling more than a truck

It is precisely to respond to this issue that BYD is developing a global approach. The manufacturer does not only want to sell vehicles but to offer a complete energy ecosystem. Its vision is based on three pillars: solar energy production, battery energy storage and fast charging.

The objective is to reduce dependence on the electrical grid, secure energy supply and offer greater visibility on operating costs. “It is not only a question of trucks,” summarizes Barış Akyalçın. “We must provide a complete solution.” An approach that could appeal to many operators facing current energy challenges.

A European network under construction

To successfully establish itself in the European market, BYD also knows that it will have to rely on a strong local network. The manufacturer is currently working on the development of its network of dealers and partners specialized in commercial vehicles.

Because in road transport, after-sales service, parts availability, financing solutions and technical support are often just as important as the vehicle itself. The objective is therefore to build a network capable of supporting transport operators in their energy transition on a daily basis.

See you in Hanover

BYD is already inviting industry professionals to the next IAA Transportation show in Hanover. The manufacturer promises several important announcements regarding its future products and solutions intended for the European market. While the details remain confidential for now, one thing now appears clearly: after conquering the bus market and then the automotive market, BYD is no longer hiding its ambitions in road transport.

The electric truck enters a new phase

Beyond the vehicles themselves, the strategy presented by BYD illustrates a profound evolution of the market. The electrification of road transport will not be decided solely by truck performance, but also by the ability of manufacturers to offer complete solutions integrating energy, charging, storage and services. In this global approach, BYD has undeniable advantages thanks to its expertise in batteries and energy infrastructures.

It now remains to transform this vision into commercial success in a particularly demanding European market. One thing is certain: the Chinese manufacturer no longer intends to watch the truck market from the side of the road. It is now ready to enter the race.
