The Zetros Survived the Arctic: Mercedes-Benz Validates Its Military Truck Under Extreme Conditions

That is where Daimler Truck chose to push its Mercedes-Benz Zetros military trucks to their limits in January 2026. The outcome: a full validation through one of the most demanding winter test programmes in the industry.

The conditions recorded on site during the trials were unforgiving. Temperatures dropping to -20°C, roads entirely covered in ice, thick layers of snow — all real-world parameters that reflect the daily reality of armies operating in northern regions. But it was inside a cold chamber that the programme reached its peak: vehicles were subjected to cold starts at -40°C. A trial that pushes both mechanics and onboard electronics to their absolute limits.

Over several weeks, the Mercedes-Benz Special Trucks teams put the Zetros through a rigorous protocol covering a wide range of stress scenarios: traction on ice and snow, driving stability, braking behaviour on variable-grip surfaces, engine operation on kerosene, and tyre pressure management.

One of the key focus areas of the test campaign was the Electronic Stability Programme — ESP — on slippery road surfaces. The system was validated under real-world conditions, with simulated skid scenarios designed to verify its effectiveness in preventing loss of control. Tests were also conducted with both loaded and unloaded vehicles, including asymmetric situations: wheels on one side running on ice, the other on loose gravel. Enough to stress the running gear and traction systems in configurations as close as possible to actual field conditions.

The technological scope went well beyond the chassis. Engineers also worked on mechatronics, embedded software, safety systems, exhaust aftertreatment, engine and transmission optimisation, cab climate control, and the use of auxiliary heating in extreme cold. A comprehensive programme that highlights the growing complexity of modern military vehicles.

Behind these tests lies a concrete operational reality. The Zetros is deployed by several armies operating in harsh climatic environments. Dennis Kinzelmann, CEO of Mercedes-Benz Special Trucks, puts it plainly: customers such as Lithuania, Canada and Ukraine need vehicles that are operational under all circumstances, including the harsh winters of northern regions. These tests are therefore no exercise in style — they are the guarantee of unwavering reliability in conflict or crisis conditions.

The Zetros was not alone on the Finnish ice. The Unimog, the Econic and the eArocs 400 were also put through the same battery of tests, with equally conclusive results. A campaign that confirms Daimler Truck's determination to certify its entire range for the most hostile environments, at a time when Europe's geopolitical landscape is driving renewed investment in land-based military capabilities.
